Monastery of the Holy Unmercenaries Kosmas & Damian (Nisi, Imathia)
About Monastery of the Holy Unmercenaries Kosmas & Damian (Nisi, Imathia) in Veria
In the village of Nisi (Nision) of Imathia, in the Alexandria municipality, stands the historic Monastery of the Holy Unmercenaries Saints Kosmas and Damian. The old katholikon—a timber-roofed three-aisled basilica—bears a founding/completion tradition of 1813–1814 and is treated as a protected historic monument; a newer parish church of the same dedication stands beside it.
Local memory tells that relics of the Unmercenaries were found in a riverside setting of an Aliakmonas side-stream, prompting a chapel and later a monastery. Sources also note historical links with Saint Catherine’s Monastery on Sinai. Monastic cells once occupied ground later partly given for the village school (1937). Feasts are kept on 1 July and 1 November, drawing pilgrims from the plain.
Today the complex functions chiefly as a cherished parish and pilgrimage church rather than a large active coenobium—still an essential stop on any religious map of Imathia. Dress modestly inside the historic katholikon; ask locally about opening outside feast days. Distinct from Veria’s urban churches of the Unmercenaries.
