Explore Veria’s historic neighborhoods, known as “Little Jerusalem” for its 48 Byzantine and post-Byzantine churches, and trace the footsteps of Apostle Paul, who preached here in 50/51 AD. This guided walking tour covers the Jewish Quarter (Barbouta), the Jewish Synagogue (built 1850, one of Europe’s oldest), the Vima Apostolou Pavlou (St. Paul’s Tribune with a mosaic commemorating his sermon), and the Old Metropolis, a stunning 11th-century basilica. You’ll also visit the Byzantine Museum, housed in a 1911 industrial building, showcasing wall paintings, mosaics, and sculptures.

Itinerary

Highlights:
  • Wander cobblestone streets in Barbouta, admiring stately homes and Hebrew inscriptions.
  • Visit the Jewish Synagogue, a poignant reminder of Veria’s Jewish community, destroyed during the Holocaust.
  • See the Vima Apostolou Pavlou, a significant Christian pilgrimage site.
  • Explore the Old Metropolis, with 12th-14th century frescoes, and the Byzantine Museum’s artifacts.
Note: Wear comfortable shoes for cobblestone alleys; modest clothing is recommended for churches.
